World Mission Update
08 January 2020

Happy New Year to all our subscribers.

Some of you may be aware that the structure within the Church Office is changing and as of 1st January 2020, the  World Mission Council has become part of the Faith Impact Forum, along with Church and Society Council and the Interfaith work of the church. Although our name has changed, at present much of our work continues as it was on 31st December 2019! However over the next few months the changes to the way in which we work will be implemented. We have been given by the General Assembly four headline priorities on which to base our work. These are:

-       Resourcing congregations

-       Building and sustaining Christian relationships globally and locally

-       Advocating Peace and Justice globally and locally

-       Advocating societal changes globally and locally

Our newsletter will continue to be called ‘Update’ and will at present still be sent out weekly on a Wednesday. It will continue with a global context but will also share a bit more of the work of the wider Faith Impact Forum in the coming months. We hope you will continue to use the information at a congregational and personal level and to engage with us on issues both global and local.

Please continue to contact Carol Finlay, Twinning & Local Development Secretary or Rebecca McGonigle, Outreach Officer if you are interested in developing your links with the world church in any way. We are also always willing to come and meet with you, speak to any group within the congregation or at a Sunday Service. Feel free to contact us on 01312255722 or

The real and present threat to DFID: why it matters

Since the UK General Election in December, rumours abound that the newly elected Prime Minister and his advisors are planning big changes to Whitehall Departments, including folding the Department for International Development into the Foreign & Commonwealth Office.

Jane Salmonson, CEO of Scotland’s International Development Alliance, writes why a possible merger between these two departments would be bad news all round, and risks vital DFID spending being diverted away from its primary purpose - ending extreme poverty.

Prayer - by John McCulloch in Israel and Palestine
God of compassion, who came into our world in the frailty of human form, breathe your hope and grace over our troubled world. You came into our world to heal and restore, and you keep coming again and again, bringing the promise of renewal and hope. Help us to hear your voice calling us back to your heart of love. Open our eyes, that we may see your world and each other as you see us. We thank you that you are a God who is acquainted with suffering, who knows what it is like to sit under the olive trees, as the moon rises over the silvery darkness of night. In the final hours before you climbed the hill of suffering for our salvation, you prayed amidst the olive trees. In the places threatened by violence and darkness, the power of your love broke through, bringing forgiveness and new life. Teach us the ways of peace, we pray; and rid our hearts of all hatred and violence that lead to war. Make us hungry and thirsty for justice. Help us to see the other as made in your image. Break down the walls of fear and separation, and plant seeds of hope and rebirth in the places of despair; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
